Hawaii Fire Law & Best Practices, Leave No Trace and contain all fires.

FIRES

808 Cleanups believes that fires for cooking and enjoyment are a natural right for everyone. However, open fires or bonfires using shipping pallets are not only illegal, but a serious hazard to the public. Please, never burn pallets, contain ALL fires, and Leave No Trace.

SOLUTIONS

Containment. Use a portable charcoal grill or similar device. Reuse old grill equipment you may find on bulk pickup days. Purchase one at The Home Depot or similar store. Purchase online at Amazon Smile (and support 808 Cleanups with this link!) (Amazon Smile for 808 Cleanups).

All fuel must be used INSIDE the grill or similar device, fully extinguished when done, and ashes disposed of in an ash disposal receptacle, or in refuse containers after the charcoal is completely extinguished (ALWAYS USE WATER – bring a bucket to collect water or fill a water jug).

Sources of fuel: Must be free of sharp metal and other hazards. Cut blocks can be purchased at hardware stores. Do not cut live trees for fuel- even dead wood can be a critical habitat for endangered species such as the Hawaiian Yellow-Faced Bee. Join 808 Cleanups for invasive plant clearings (managed by DLNR under special use permit) that include kiawe wood.
