Create a team in 808 Cleanups to Adopt a Site

Take Stewardship to the Next Level.

The Adopt a Site program forms the core of 808 Cleanups. You take the initiative to conduct stewardship on your own schedule and 808 Cleanups can support you with communications, supplies and coordination! All you’ll need to get started is the 808 Cleanups App! If you haven’t yet, please also sign the 808 Cleanups Waiver!

Why is it so important to share your cleanups? So glad you asked!

  • It encourages other people by showing that they aren’t the only ones who care about the environment.
  • It highlights problem areas and attracts more help to solve those problems.
  • It can get your friends involved and rapidly expands the amount of people that learn about 808 Cleanups and our mission.
  • It makes your social media feed look pretty darn cool!
  • The data collected can be used for science, education and grant funding.

HOW TO ADOPT A SITE(S) WITH 808 CLEANUPS

Step 1: You choose a location that you like. It could be one that you spend a lot of time at already, or one that you want to get to know better. It could be a trail, a beach, a city park or any other place that you want. Check the 808 Cleanups App to see if somebody has already adopted the location. If they have, that’s fine, you can adopt it too. When you’ve chosen your spot, click the Your Adopted Site button on the app’s HOME screen.

Step 2: Figure out what supplies you’ll need to take care of your site. Common items are gloves, trash bags, trash tongs, a scale, and a bucket. More complex items such as graffiti removal kits are available too. Make a list of what you already have or can borrow. Once you know what you’ll need, follow the guide in the App to generate a Supply Request. Once it is submitted we’ll get in touch with you shortly.

Step 3: Now it’s time to take action! We recommend cleaning your site at least once a month. You can adopt multiple sites, and you can co-adopt a site that has other active volunteers at it. If you need help due to the volume of attention your site needs, the 808 Cleanups App can be your critical tool to coordinate your actions and link up with other volunteers.

Step 4: Share your cleanups! Use the 808 Cleanups App along with your scale to report what you’ve done each time you get out there. You can also share on your own social media feeds as well as 808 Cleanups’ official Facebook group page.

***What to do with rubbish you collect?***

Please place in existing park cans (make sure to weigh first with your luggage scale!), or if too large (like derelict nets), you can place next to the cans for pickup (please weigh large items as best you can too).  Is your site without cans or hit by illegal dumping? Please email us at 808cleanups@gmail.com for additional assistance.

Cleanup Data

Help us track everyone’s stewardship efforts and get even more done as a team! We provide you a free luggage scale to weigh rubbish and your very own 808 field shirt! Use your 808 Cleanups App to compile your data and track your volunteer hours. All your data goes into our monthly and yearly reports- together we can get so much done!

Cleanup Photos & Videos

Take plenty of photos and videos! Pictures of the site before your cleanup, pictures of litter collected in buckets or bags, pictures of the area after you’ve cleaned, action shots of people cleaning, and a group photo or selfie- smiling faces invite people to join the cleanup team!

You’re ready. Let’s get your stewardship started!
